A late Tresor Kandol strike deep into stoppage time ensured all three points went the way of Barnet as Dale slumped to their fourth league defeat on the trot. Not for the first time this season the scoreline failed to reflect Dale's performance especially in the first half when Steve Parkin's outfit playing with a high tempo simply dominated proceedings. It took a while to get going though as both sides struggled to find any sort of form with Dale closing everything down when they didn't have the ball and sadly giving it away too easily when they had it. It meant that early chances were at a premium with just a 20-yard drive from Rochdale striker Chris Dagnall that spun wide of the mark and an effort from Tresor Kandol that adopted a similar fate being the pick. With a quarter of an hour played Rochdale began to find a little rhythm and with it they found the key to unlock the Barnet defence who in truth looked hesitant.Gary Brown was unlucky to see his blocked by Nick Bailey after a sweeping move down the right flank enabled him to get a firm low drive away. So too Darrell Clarke from the opposite side who also chanced his arm from 18-yards with a dipping shot that just cleared the bar. On 22 minutes Dale's persistence paid off and they opened the scoring thanks mainly to 'keeper Lee Harrison.Alan Goodall curled a left-footed cross to the back post, a cross that Harrison should have claimed but he chose to stay on his line allowing Dagnal to head back across the goal and Clarke to sweep home the ball from close range. The Bees were stung into action and three minutes later they almost got on level terms as the dangerous Jason Puncheon began to get into the game.It was his determined run down the left and pass to Sinclair that brought the chance for Nicky Bailey to have a crack from just inside the box, but James Sharp managed to get in the way with a despairing block. With ten minutes remaining in the half the home side grew in confidence playing down the slope and moments after Puncheon brought a solid save from Gilks after finding room on the left Barnet scored. It was the first of an afternoon treble for Kandol who thanked Nicky Bailey for putting the ball on plate for him after slotting the ball past Gilks inside the box, though Bailey might want to add his thanks to Dale skipper Gary Jones who simply let his man get away far too easily. The home crafted a couple more chances just before the break but thankfully Dale's goal remained intact thanks to a Gilks save from Hendon and Simon King failing to get his head on a freekick after stealing in behind Alan Goodall. Rochdale came out for the second half looking to use the slope to their advantage but it was the home side that found their way to goal with a gift of a chance from the Dale defence. It arrived in true route one style after a long kick down field by Harrison looked likely to be headed back to his opposite number by James Sharp. The header never arrived after Gilks called for the ball but as he advanced so too did Kandol and he nipped in to head the ball over the stranded 'keeper. Ten minutes later Rochdale levelled matters thanks to Glenn Murray's first for the club following a cross by Alan Goodall out wide on the left. Murray headed back across Harrison and into the net despite a last minute dive from the Barnet stopper. Kandol continued to put pressure on the Dale defence and should have notched his hat-trick in the 63rd minute after Bailey once again slotted a lovely ball through. The Barnet striker raced clear but looked undecided what to do when he got in the box allowing Sharp to get back at him and make the challenge. Rochdale weren't without chances though nothing arrived as clear cut as their hosts with Murray curling an effort wide and Jones smashing a 20-yard shot straight into the 'keeper's arms. Gilks was also kept on his toes as Dean Sinclair whipped a left-sided corner goalwards with around ten minutes to go.It was an effort that would have crept under the bar hadn't the Dale keeper managed to push the ball over the bar. With the scores level it looked as though the two sides would be sharing the spoils but deep into injury time Kandol struck again. It was a goal crafted by Barnet and though it hurt, it was the best goal of the game.No defensive errors, simply a well worked move by Puncheon and Hessenthaler who delivered an inch perfect ball for Kandol to head home from six-yards. Rochdale did deserve to get something from the game there is no doubt about that a view shared by most people in the ground, but sadly yet again Dale failed to capitalise when they were on top. | |||||||||
