Rochdale were dumped out of the Carling Cup, falling at the first hurdle thanks in part to a lack of discipline, a poor set of officials and an inspired Dean Windass. Dale manager Steve Parkin couldn't hide his anger after captain Gary Jones was sent from the field in the second half after kicking out at Bobby Petta.
"He should be setting an example to everyone, he's the club captain, but tonight he's not only let himself down in a big way, he's let all his team mates down too." Referee Mr Boyeson also came in for criticism for the Dale boss for a poor display in the middle, but Parkin kept a lid on his true feelings. "There's not a lot I can say without getting in trouble so I'll just say that he had a very poor game and leave it at that." The opening few minutes of the game were lively and Rochdale crafted the first chance of the evening after just three minutes. A long ball forward from the back met with a flicked header from Grant Holt. The ball was seized upon by strike partner Rickie Lambert who raced into the box, but his low shot was blocked by Mark Bower. Sadly four minutes later Dale were behind. Richard Edgehill combined well down the right flank before pinging a superb cross to Dean Windass inside the Rochdale box. The veteran striker somehow turned to sweep a right footed volley into the back of the net as an unsighted Matt Gilks stood rooted to the spot. Rochdale responded well to the early set back and on nine minutes during a prolonged spell of pressure had two good claims for a penalty turned by the official. Both looked like handball, both looked like penalties, both were waved by Mr Boyeson. With 23 minutes played Lee Cartwright who was having his best game for Rochdale burst through the middle and tried his luck from 20-yards after finding a gap in the Bantam rearguard. Cartwright sadly scuffed his effort along the ground making it an easy save for 'keeper Russell Howarth. Bradford should have doubled their lead just past the half hour mark after Danny Wetherall flicked on a corner from the near post. The ball raced across the front off goal just avoiding the forehead of Mark Bower as he charged into the box. Three minutes later and Grant Holt was trying to bring the game level with a lovely shot on the turn, but Howarth was well placed to make the save diving low to his left to smother the ball. Then on 38 minutes Windass won a foul on the edge of the box, something that the referee was loathed to award to Grant Holt at the end. Whilst Gilks did well to tip the freekick from Bridge-Wilkinson over the bar, rough justice or should that be 'ref justice' fell dale's way from the ensuing corner. Danny Cadamatrei was on hand to head the corner home from close range doubling Bradford's advantage on 40 minutes. Just before the break the home side craved out a couple of chances to get back in the game. Firstly Holt hit a blistering drive from the edge of the box that fizzed just wide of the post and that was followed up by an Alan Goodall header from a Tommy Jaszczun corner that Howarth had to push over his bar. The second half was to bring three more goals for the visitors, but it was Dale on the hour mark that looked the most likely to notch the next. Following a scrappy start to the half Blair Sturrock was brought on in place of Tommy Jaszczun as Steve Parkin opted to go with three strikers. The plan to get back into the game almost worked three minutes later, but it was the determination of left back Alan Goodall rather than the introduction of another striker that did it. Goodall gritted his teeth, pinned back his ears and rampaged through the Bradford rearguard coming inside from the flank. The run deserved at least a shot on goal after riding three challenges, but substitute defender Damian Stewart was on hand to put in a successful last ditch challenge some eight yards out. Three minutes later the game was sealed for Bradford after Windass scored his second of the night. A deft header at the near post from a left sided cross from the lively Cadamatrei flew past the hapless Gilks and into the far corner. Sturrock's introduction almost brought a consolation goal for Ernie Cooksey with 20 minutes to go, but the cross from the right had a little too much pace for the former Oldham Athletic man to make contact. With 74 minutes on the clock Dale were reduced to ten men after captain Gary Jones tangled with Bobby Petta in the middle of the park. Jones inexplicably kicked out at a grounded Petta, resulting in the Bradford man leaping to his feet and retaliating.
However, in keeping with a poor performance all night the referee cautioned Petta amidst a chorus of gasps from the dale faithful and cheers from those of a Yorkshire persuasion. Steve Parkin's plans of attacking the game were up in the air and Bradford made the legs of the Rochdale players a little heavier three minutes later. That man Windass again on hand to find the back of the net, popping the ball into the back of the net with a well placed header from just inside the box. With nine minutes left it was five after Dale were caught on the break. Mark Bridge-Wilkinson fired in a low shot beating Gilks low to his left and that as they say was that. The ecstasy from Saturday's result against Leyton Orient was followed by the pain tonight and it's a pain for Dale and Gary Jones that will continue for three more games.

"We were never going to win the Carling Cup and for Gary Jones to lash out like he did was pure stupidity.
Both were summoned over to the referee who flashed the only card he could to Jones, a red and the Dale captain trudged off the field. Mr Boyeson then turned his attentions to Petta who would have been expecting the same fate for his part in the flare up.
